If you’re a busy mom managing prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, or chronic stress, there’s something I want you to understand deeply:
You cannot heal what is constantly in survival mode.
Before adjusting another meal plan or adding another supplement, you must first calm your nervous system. Because when your body feels unsafe, blood sugar will reflect that — no matter how “perfect” your food choices are.
March is often a chaotic month. Schedules shift. Energy dips. Responsibilities pile up. And if you’ve noticed your numbers creeping up or your cravings increasing, stress may be the hidden driver.
I know this not just professionally — but personally.

A Season When Stress Took Over
There was a season in my life when everything felt heavy at once. I was balancing my pharmacy work, family responsibilities, and my passion for helping women heal. On the outside, I was functioning. On the inside, I was running on cortisol.
I remember waking up already tense. My shoulders were tight before my feet even hit the floor. My mind would start racing with everything that needed to get done.
And even though I was eating well and doing “all the right things,” my body felt inflamed. My energy dipped in the afternoon. Sleep was lighter. Patience was thinner.
That’s when I had to confront something humbling:
I was trying to discipline my body into healing…
instead of helping it feel safe.
As a pharmacist, I understood the physiology. Chronic stress elevates cortisol. Elevated cortisol increases glucose production. Increased glucose requires more insulin. Over time, that loop strains the entire metabolic system.
But knowing the science wasn’t enough.
I had to live it differently.
The Turning Point: Regulation Before Restriction
The shift didn’t begin with food.
It began with stillness.
Instead of tightening my routines, I softened them.
I began each morning with five minutes of breathing followed by at least five minutes of meditation before checking my phone.
I placed one hand over my heart and one over my abdomen and practiced longer exhales.
I started asking myself, “What would feel supportive right now?” instead of “What should I be doing?”
Those small shifts helped calm your nervous system in ways that no supplement alone could accomplish.
Within weeks, I noticed:
- Less tension in my shoulders
- More stable energy throughout the day
- Fewer stress cravings
- Deeper sleep
My body wasn’t fighting me anymore. It was responding to safety.
Why Stress Impacts Blood Sugar So Powerfully
When your brain perceives stress — whether it’s emotional, mental, or physical — it sends a signal that you need fuel to survive. The liver releases glucose into the bloodstream. Cortisol stays elevated.
This response is protective in short bursts.
But when stress is constant:
- Blood sugar stays elevated longer
- Insulin works harder
- Inflammation increases
- Fatigue worsens
You can eat a balanced meal and still see higher numbers if your nervous system is overwhelmed.
That’s why learning to calm your nervous system is foundational for metabolic healing.
What Actually Helped Me Shift
Here are the three practices that changed everything during that stressful season:
1. Long Exhale Breathing
Inhale for 4, exhale for 6.
The extended exhale activates the parasympathetic nervous system — your body’s “rest and repair” mode.
2. Boundaries Around Mental Input
No phone first thing in the morning.
No multitasking while eating.
Less exposure to constant noise.
3. Compassion Over Criticism
Instead of blaming myself for feeling overwhelmed and not being “perfect”, I acknowledged the weight I was carrying.
Compassion reduces internal pressure. Reduced pressure lowers stress hormones. Lower stress hormones support blood sugar balance.
This is how we work with the body instead of against it.
What This Means for You
If you are in a stressful season right now, please hear me:
Your body is not broken.
It is responding exactly as it was designed to respond.
The goal is not to eliminate stress entirely. That isn’t realistic for busy moms.
The goal is to increase your recovery from stress.
That begins when you calm your nervous system daily — even for a few minutes.
Try this today:
- Pause before meals and take three slow breaths.
- Unclench your jaw.
- Lower your shoulders.
- Step outside for 5 minutes of sunlight.
Small moments of regulation accumulate.
A Gentler Way Forward
Healing does not require force.
It requires safety.
As women, especially mothers, we are conditioned to push through exhaustion. But metabolic healing thrives in calm environments — physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
This March, instead of tightening control, I invite you to soften.
Start with one breath.
One pause.
One compassionate thought.
Because when you calm the nervous system, the rest of the body begins to follow.
And that is where true, sustainable healing begins.
