As we approach the new year, many of us begin to think about the changes we want to make. For busy moms, managing the demands of work, family, and personal health can feel overwhelming. But with creating a few new habits and a shift in focus, 2025 can be the year you reclaim your energy, improve your blood sugar control, and renew your sense of well-being.

If you’re ready to take steps toward a healthier you, here’s a simple approach to creating habits for health that stick and empower you to live your best life.

1. Start Small with One Habit at a Time

As moms, we often feel the pressure to do it all, but tackling multiple new habits at once can lead to burnout. Start with one small, manageable change. If you’re focused on improving blood sugar control, for example, begin by incorporating one extra serving of veggies daily, or setting aside ten minutes each morning for meditation to reduce stress and improve insulin sensitivity.

When you master that first habit, celebrate it! Then, add another. By building your habits one step at a time, you’ll create a steady foundation for lasting change.

Quick Tip: If you’re a fan of morning coffee, try swapping a few sips with a glass of water before your first cup. This small habit can help rehydrate your body after a night’s sleep and keep your energy steady throughout the day.

2. Make Habits Part of Your Routine

The key to successful habit-building is making it part of your daily routine. Connect new habits to something you’re already doing. James Clear calls this “habit stacking” in his book Atomic Habits. For instance, if you’re aiming to include a nutritious breakfast daily, prepare ingredients the night before while cleaning up after dinner. This preps you to make a healthy choice with ease in the morning rush.

Small rituals that fit into your day can shift your focus from restrictive diets to holistic care that feels natural. Over time, these habits will feel more like second nature than something you “should” do.

Quick Tip: Set gentle reminders for yourself. Use your phone’s alarm to alert you to stretch, drink water, or take five deep breaths, especially when stress begins to creep in.

3. Reframe Your Health Goals

Instead of setting overly ambitious New Year’s resolutions that can feel like a sprint, consider creating a vision for your health journey in 2025. Ask yourself what you truly want this year: more energy? Better blood sugar levels? Reduced stress? Then, choose habits that support those goals.

For example, instead of aiming to “never eat sugar,” try aiming for “more balanced meals that fuel my body.” This approach emphasizes progress over perfection and is a lot easier to maintain when life gets busy.

4. Find Moments of Calm

One of the most overlooked aspects of health is managing stress. Studies show that high levels of stress can affect blood sugar levels and overall metabolic health. If you’re juggling family, work, and personal responsibilities, even short moments of calm can make a difference.

Start by setting aside five minutes each day for mindfulness, deep breathing, or a brief meditation. You’ll feel a greater sense of peace and clarity, and over time, these moments of calm can become a powerful tool in managing your health.

Quick Tip: If you have kids, try a “quiet time” practice together, where everyone sits quietly or listens to soft music. It’s a great way to bond and encourage a mindful habit for the whole family.

5. Practice Self-Compassion

This year, embrace progress over perfection. Creating new habits for your health takes time, and there will be days when things don’t go as planned. Instead of feeling discouraged, remind yourself that every small step is moving you closer to your goal.

As a busy mom, you already do so much, so give yourself credit for the little victories along the way. Maybe you tried a new recipe that balanced your blood sugar, or you took a five-minute breather instead of pushing through a stressful moment. Celebrate these wins!

The Power of Consistency for Lifelong Health

Creating habits that positively impact your health is all about consistency and self-compassion. By focusing on sustainable changes and letting go of the need for perfection, you’ll set yourself up for lasting wellness in the year ahead. Every new habit is a step toward living with more vitality, joy, and balance.

So, here’s to making 2025 your year of positive change. You deserve to feel your best, and these small shifts can make all the difference. Embrace each new habit as an opportunity to thrive, and celebrate every small victory along the way.

Wishing you a happy, healthy new year!

  1. This blog post is so inspiring and full of practical tips for busy moms looking to prioritize their health in 2025. I love the emphasis on starting small and celebrating each victory!

What other small habits do you recommend incorporating into a daily routine to promote overall well-being and balance?

    • Thank you. When working with my clients, I recommend small, sustainable changes that work for them and their specific goals. I often suggest things like adding an 8 ounce glass of water before supper to increase daily water intake or walking around the house during commercials to increase daily activity.

      • Those little things do make a difference and are easy to implement. I remember reading about one person who spent a lot of time at their desk saying that they have introduced burpees when going to the bathroom, or kitchen, or any other time they moved away. They claimed to gain a lot more energy and movement from this simple practice.
