Ways to Improve A New Habit

There are ways to improve a new habit once established. Habits are initiated by cues. You want the cue to be a big part of your environment. Make the cue that triggers and prompts the habit as obvious and visible as possible. You can redesign your environment to make the cues visible. This will support and reinforce the habit so that is becomes easy and natural.

Overcome Environmental Friction

Willpower alone cannot overcome your environment. As convenience increases, so do the odds that you will do the habit. Habits are much easier to build when they fit in the flow of your life. It is hard to be motivated enough to overcome the friction in the environment. Environmental friction increases the effort and the tension associated with the new habit. By reducing the friction, you create a supportive environment for the new habit to become optimal. This optimization of your environment makes it easier to stick with the 2 minute habit and follow through on the implementation intention.

Prime Your Environment

Another way to improve a new habit is to prime your environment. Organize the space for its intended purpose. Doing this will make it easier to do the habit. Make the cue a big part of the environment. This is because we are wired to do what is convenient aka easy and to follow the path of least resistance. Ask yourself, “How can I design my world so it is easy to do what is right?”. How can I prime my life so that my future habits are easier? Actions that matter the most should also be the ones that are the easiest to do. For example, if your new habit is to floss daily then your floss should be easily visible when you are brushing your teeth. Perhaps you put it next to your toothpaste or in a bowl next to your toothbrush.
