Vitamin and Mineral Balance

Balancing stones

Vitamin and mineral balance is so important for optimal health. It is one of the foundations for total wellness. There are many things that can affect that balance including diet, stress, medications, pollution, nutritional supplements and inherited patterns. Knowing the relationships among the vitamins and minerals and how they interact with each other is important for overall health.

A healthy diet may not provide all the needed nutrients depending on the soil in which the food was grown or the method in which it was prepared. Nutrient depleted soil results in nutrient depleted food. Peeling certain foods and cooking at certain temperatures can result in nutrient depleted foods.

Physical and emotional stress can deplete the body of many nutrients and reduce the capability to absorb and utilize others. Zinc and the B-complex vitamins are particularly susceptible to depletion during times of increased stress.

Prescription and over-the-counter medications can cause depletion of stored minerals and/or increase levels of toxic metals. Examples are diuretics, antacids (Tums, Mylanta, Maalox), aspirin and oral contraceptives (birth control).

Pollution causes exposure to a variety of toxic metals. For example, hair dyes can expose you to lead while antiperspirants increase your exposure to aluminum. Even copper and aluminum cookware cause some exposure to those toxic metals.

Nutritional supplements that aren’t the right type or are the improper amount can produce many mineral excesses and/or deficiencies which contributes to an overall biochemical imbalance.

The vitamin and mineral balance (relationships) are as important, if not more so, as the individual levels themselves. These are just a few of the nutritional interrelationships that exist.

  • Zinc can reduce the beneficial effects of Vitamin D.
  • Calcium can reduce the beneficial effect of vitamin A and high doses can block magnesium absorption as well as contribute to osteoporosis, weight gain and fatigue.
  • Magnesium assists in better calcium absorption and promotes calcium deposition to bone as well as helping to produce optimal energy in cells. Deficiency has been associated with heart attacks, anxiety and nervousness.
  • Vitamin D can cause a deficiency of magnesium.
  • Potassium/calcium ratio in tissue reflects thyroid balance.
  • Calcium/magnesium ratio in tissue is a primary indicator of blood sugar regulation.

This is why doing an HTMA screening can be so beneficial. It provides analysis of the mineral status and nutritional metabolic activity that has occurred during the growth phase of the hair sample. It is an economical and sensitive indicator of the long-term effect of diet, stress, toxic metal exposure and their effects on your mineral balance that is difficult to obtain through other clinical tests.
